CHEMPRO SUPPLIES INC. AUTOMATIC BLACKSAND IRON FILTRATION SYSTEM

Water containing high levels of iron and manganese is common in ground water all over the Earth.

If these elements remain in your water system, they can damage fixtures and appliances and cause staining of clothes and surfaces. A water softener alone is not capable of removing these stainers unless they are present in very low levels.

There are several different types of iron filters we recommend; and what may work well at one site, may not work well at another. All these iron filters operate reliably and afford very low maintenance under the right conditions.

Low Maintenance: It doesn’t need any other product to work and all is automatic.

LOW OPERATIONAL COSTS.

Q&A

Why are these systems called"blacksand" iron filters?

These filters use a specially formulated filter media made from a naturally mined form of MnO2 blacksand. The blacksand filter media has a special coating of manganese oxide, which oxidizes iron, manganese and iron in water, upon contact with the filter media.

How do they work?

Iron and manganese are metals often found dissolved in water.
They cause stains when exposed to air in the laundry, bath, etc. by oxidizing or “rusting.” The blacksand filter media oxidizes dissolved iron and manganese on contact, as the water flows through the blacksand filter, and causes these elements to precipitate (or form solids) in the bed of the filter.
The iron filter backwashes these small particles to drain every few days in the middle of the night (or some other preset time), thereby cleaning and restoring the filter media. To provide the oxidizing
power to precipitate these metals, the filter is automatically cleaned and restored by itself, it doesn’t need regeneration.
This is a new revolutionary advanced filtration media completely developed in Germany. Color and odor removal Iron, Manganese, Hidrogen Sulfide Removal, Efficient reduction of Arsenic, Zinc, Copper, Lead, Radium, Uranium and other radionuclides and heavy metals. This Katalyst Black sand media is ANSI/NSF 61 Certified for drinking water applications and has met the ANSI/NSF 372 Lead free compliance.

Is the strong sodium hypochlorite toxic or harmful?
Hypochlorite is a powerful oxidizer, can
cause skin irritation or burns if direct contact were
to occur. But now with this special Media Filter no
more problems for your health, you will no use
any more these hazardous products.
A special double rinse makes sure the filter bed is
free of any concentrate sodium hypochlorite
residual used in the water.
Do these filters have any special conditions in order to work properly?
Yes! There are very specific conditions
required. The water must have a pH of 5.8 to 10.5
The Removal capacity rate for Fe2+ 3000ppm,
hydrogen sulfide is 500 PPM.
My water also has a very bad smell of sulfur, is this a problem?

These blacksand filters will remove up to 5 PPM of hydrogen sulfide, With this Filter Media you
will experiment no more bad odor and taste, no more Stain on your clothes and bathroom.

I have very high manganese (greater than .05 PPM), will these iron filters remove manganese also?

Yes, these systems work great to remove manganese, both dissolved and oxidized.

What maintenance is required?

It doesn’t need any maintenance. Only each 5 years to change the media and wash the silica sand
The control valve injector screen should be
cleaned yearly.

Will there be a pressure loss through the system?

Properly sized, the system produces a very low pressure drop at service flow rates, usually around 5 psi.

Can I route the backwash water to my septic tank?

Yes. The backwash water can be routed to the septic tank with no problem in almost all cases.

How frequently do I have to replace the filter media?

The filter media will last for 2 to 4 years depending on usage and conditions. It is easily replaced.
